Speckled Wood Butterfly drinking from Forget-me-not flowers

I took this photo in our garden. We get lots of Speckled Wood butterflies (Pararge aegeria) because of the woodland type area we have in the bottom of the garden. I've seen them drink from rotting fallen apples and from small flowers. The caterpillars are small and green and live on types of grass so I don't often see them. I think they are a beautiful little butterflies and am glad we see them so often!

I've raised Cabbage White caterpillars since I was very small and still do today (I have lots of chrysalis in the shed at the moment). I still love the wonder of watching them grow and change into something so beautiful.

Heather :)

Beautiful Butterfly
by: Sonya

That is such a lovely butterfly picture Heather. If I am not mistaken, those foget-me-not flowers are ones you grew from seed yourself - and to think they are now being supped on by a butterfly is even more rewarding!
So glad to hear you are over-wintering some pupae; we haven't tried cabbage whites but we did succeed with a Peacock butterfly caterpillar. It was so beautiful with it's bright eye spots all freshly marked.
We have an Elephant Hawkmoth buried in an aquarium filled with leaves and soil downstairs - looking forward to next May!
Thank you so much for sharing your lovely photo with us.
Best wishes
Sonya
